Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER, MA--- After the seventeen run outburst last night the Worcester bats went dormant for most of the ballgame this evening against the Sussex SkyHawks, but woke up just in time. The Tornadoes walked off with a win after Worcester native Jeff LaHair singled through a drawn in infield with the bases loaded. He had been 0-4 before driving in the game winning fourth run in the 4-3 victory. Justin Knoff (2-1) had been very economical with his pitches, going seven strong innings, striking out and walking two, scattering five hits. Setup man Sandy Nin (0-0) extended his scoreless inning streak to five and two thirds after pitching the eighth. Closer Matt Petrusek (0-2, 2BS) then came on to close out Worcester, who had forced him to cough up a save in his last try. Alex Trezza and Nick Salotti led off the ninth with base hits and were eventually driven in by a Carlos Sosa single and Mike Leonard triple. Sosa was hosed at the plate on that triple which sent the game into extra frames; the first of 2009 for Worcester. Trezza again led off another inning, the eleventh, with a single then was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike MacMillan who pinch ran for Salotti in the ninth. Carlos Sosa was intentionally walked, Mike Leonard singled, and the stage was set for Jeff LaHair. Alex Pena (2-0) gave up all three runs earned in the no decision. Chris Anderson (1-0) and Josef Frias (0-0) threw multiple innings of scoreless relief before Anthony Sullivan (1-1) pitched the top of the eleventh to get the win. Tomorrow at a special 11:05am start for Baseball in Education Day, Zack Zuercher (1-0) looks to follow up positively his nine-strikeout start for Worcester against Mike Schellinger (0-1). The game can be heard on tape delay at the normal 7:05pm time on AM580 FM94.9 WTAG, pre-game at 6:50.
