Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA - (August 9, 2009) - The Brockton Rox offense continued to spin its wheels while the Worcester Tornadoes circled the base paths on Sunday night at Campanelli Stadium. Worcester won a three-game series over the Rox with a 6-3 victory on Sunday night.
The Rox offense sputtered against the Can-Am League wins leader, LHP Ryan Lobban, who recorded his league-best ninth win of the year. Lobban tossed seven shutout innings and scattered three hits in a completely dominant outing. The only threat the Rox mustered came in the second inning when Brockton loaded the bases with one out. However Lobban escaped unscathed with a foul out and a ground out to first base. Outside of that second inning, he never allowed more than one base runner in an inning.
Worcester's offense tagged Rox starter LHP Fraser Robinson for four runs on ten hits in 5.2 innings. The Tornadoes scored in the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. In his first game out of retirement, C Yohanny Valera hit a two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning to give the Tornadoes a 3-0 lead.
Seven of the Tornadoes' 14 total hits went for extra bases including five doubles and two home runs.
Brockton's attempt at a late-inning comeback fizzled in the eighth inning. After the first four batters reached against reliever LHP Chris Anderson, including a two-run double by DH Palmer Karr, Worcester tabbed RHP Eddie Pena to clean up the mess. He quickly squashed the Rox momentum, getting a double play on the first pitch he threw. Brockton would score another run in the inning on an RBI single by DH Derek Kinzler, however that would be the end of the scoring for Brockton.
The Rox begin a seven-game road trip on Monday with a double header in Sussex. Monday's first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM in Sussex. RHP Buster Lussier (2-0, 2.45 ERA) will start in game one for the Rox opposite Skyhawks' starter RHP Justin Knoff. In game two, LHP Craig Anderson (6-4, 3.65 ERA) will face RHP Tim Stringer.
