Worcester Bravehearts News Release
PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Despite a late comeback attempt, the Worcester Bravehearts' winning streak has finally been snapped.
The Pittsfield Suns handed Worcester its first loss in team history by a final of 6 - 4 June 11 at Wahconah Park in Pittsfield, Mass. Due to an extensive rain delay, the game was called after seven innings played.
Justin Finan, Pittsfield's starter from Holy Cross, allowed five hits but received plenty of run support to pick up the win. Finan struck out eight Bravehearts and allowed only one run in five innings pitched.
Suns catcher Dan Palazzo opened the scoring in the second inning with a one-out double and later scored on an error by Worcester shortstop Nick Nunziato. The Suns increased their lead to 4 - 0 in the third inning with an RBI single by third baseman Jeff McGarry and a 2RBI double by the designated hitter Dan Gardella. Gardella and McGarry finished 2 - 4 at the plate in the winning effort.
Bravehearts starter Andrew Bergmann took the loss in four innings pitched, allowing eight hits and four earned runs. Worcester reliever Justin Versteeg replaced Bergmann but only pitched one inning, as he allowed Pittsfield to score two key insurance runs in the fifth inning.
Worcester rallied in the sixth inning with two runs of its own. Outfielder Nate Pajka, a Douglas, Mass., native, hit a leadoff triple, and catcher Connor David knocked him in with an RBI double. David scored on an error by Palazzo to make it 6 - 3 Suns, but outfielder Brendan O'Reilly struck out swinging with two men on to end the inning. Nick Nunziato added a solo home run to begin the seventh inning, but it was not enough to tie the game.
The 6 - 1 Bravehearts return home to face the East Division leading Brockton Rox at 11:05 a.m. June 12 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
