Salem, VA - The hot start to the month of August continued Wednesday night for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.

After recording eight runs on 14 hits in the series opener Tuesday, the Woodpeckers (12-19, 43-53) had another dozen hits at Salem Memorial Ballpark en route to an 8-6 victory over the Salem Red Sox (49-48, 14-17). Fayetteville has now won five of their last six games, all against North Division opponents.

The Woodpeckers wasted no time getting the offense going in the top of the first inning. Jose Alvarez doubled with one out and Logan Cerny followed with a walk. They both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch from Red Sox starter Gabriel Jackson before Justin Williams delivered with a two-run single to left to push Fayetteville in front, 2-0.

Tyler Whitaker continued the hit parade with a base hit, which Collin Price followed with a two-run double down the left field line to double the lead. It was the first two runs batted in for Price in his minor league career after making his debut on Tuesday night. Two batters later, Leosdany Molina drove Price in with a single to left and capped off a five-run first for the Woodpeckers.

Salem did not throw in the towel, however. Against Fayetteville starter Alex Santos, the Red Sox picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a RBI single by Darel Belen coupled with a Justin Williams throwing error. In the third, Brainer Bonaci and Marcelo Mayer drew walks against Santos before both advanced on a double steal. Blaze Jordan grounded out to score Bonaci and bring the score to 5-3. Tyler Miller followed that up with a base hit to drive in Mayer and chase Santos from the game. New Woodpeckers pitcher Fabricio Reina got Daniel McIlveny to fly out to right, but Miller wound up scoring to tie the ballgame.

Reina ended the inning on the hill before handing the ball off to Edinson Batista (W, 7-3). The righty issued four walks and hit two batters over four innings, but Batista kept the Red Sox off the scoreboard and lowered his season earned run average to 2.82.

With the game still tied in the top of the seventh, Cerny led off the inning against Salem reliever Bryan Lucas (L, 0-1) with a single and stole second base. Then, Williams lifted a fly ball into right field that was missed by Belen. Cerny dashed home to retake the lead for Fayetteville, 6-5. Williams, who made it all the way to third base on the error, scored on an RBI double from Whitaker to raise the lead to two. Moments later, Price traded places with Whitaker on a double of his own to drive in his third run of the game and the Woodpeckers' eighth run, the second night in a row in which Fayetteville eclipsed eight runs.

Batista departed the game ahead of the bottom of the eighth as Jacob DeLabio (SV, 2) came on to pitch. DeLabio ran into trouble early in his outing as Bonaci ripped a one-out triple into the right center field gap. Mayer singled him home in the following at bat, but was thrown out trying for a double by Woodpeckers right fielder Cody Orr. DeLabio hit Jordan with a pitch before retiring Miller and then pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second career save.

Fayetteville looks to secure a series split on Thursday night with RHP Miguel Ullola on the mound. On the other side, the Red Sox turn to RHP Angel Bastardo to end their five-game losing streak. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 ET.
