
Wolves Split Opening Weekend with Shoot-Out Victory

The Sudbury Wolves closed out their Opening Weekend with an exciting 5-4 shoot-out victory over the Mississauga Steelheads. It was a hard fought, back and forth game, with the Wolves prevailing in the shootout.
The Wolves played a large portion of the opening period shorthanded, as they had to kill off four penalties in the frame. The Wolves kept the Steelheads off the scoreboard thanks to a great team penalty kill. TROY TIMPANO made a number of key saves and was the backbone of the penalty kill in the 1st period. With less than two minutes to go in the frame, the Wolves got on the board when MICHAEL PEZZETTA buried the pass from CHAD HEFFERNAN on the 2-on-0 breakaway. TIMPANO was also was credited with the second assist on the play, after a nice stretch pass out of the Wolves end. After one, the shots were 11-3 in favour of Mississauga.
Despite scoring a late goal in the first period, the Wolves were unable to carry that momentum into the 2nd. Mississauga scored two goals in early to go ahead by one. Once again, the Wolves penalty killers had to come up big. Late in the period, TROY TIMPANO made a huge save off the Mississauga attacker to keep his club in the game. Shortly thereafter, CHARLEY GRAASKAMP buried a nice feed from JACOB HARRIS to tie the game. The Wolves went into the room tied at two. Shots after 40 minutes were 20-9 for the Steelheads.
The Wolves came out flying in the 3rd. JACOB HARRIS put home the MATT SCHMALZ shot off the post to give the Wolves a one goal lead. Less than a minute later, PEZZETTA scored his second of the game from KYLE CAPOBIANCO, putting the Wolves up by two. Later in the period, penalties continued to be an issue for the Wolfpack as Mississauga tied the game with two powerplay markers. The score remained tied at the end of regulation, meaning for the first time the Wolves headed to 3-on-3 overtime. Shots were 31-17 for the Steelheads.
The overtime frame had fans on the edge of their seats thanks to the open ice created by the new overtime format. The two teams traded high quality scoring chances however, no one could find the back of the net. Final shots were 35-22 for Mississauga.
In the shootout TROY TIMPANO shut down all three Steelheads shooters, and DMITRY SOKOLOV scored the loan goal to give the Wolves the victory.
