Sudbury Wolves News Release
(Greater Sudbury, ON) The Sudbury Wolves welcomed two new players to the organization during the U18 OHL Priority Selection Wednesday night.
The Sudbury Wolves selected a left shot defenceman, Maverick Hayes, 8th overall from the Pembroke Lumber Kings u18 AAA and left shot centreman, Joey Brehmer, 28th overall from the Waterloo Wolves U18 AAA.
"We always look for a player who displays a high-level of compete in this draft," said Sudbury Wolves VP and General Manager Rob Papineau. "We like to see the success of this draft with players who may have been missed the first time and come back in their U18 year with something to prove. That is what we saw in our picks today and they caught our eye by stepping-up to the plate," Papineau added.
Maverick is a 6'4, 190lbs., defenceman from Ottawa, ON. He is known to the Wolves' scouts as a big, strong, defender who skates well. He moves the puck out of the zone with ease by making simple, smart plays. Maverick is a tough player to play against with an active stick and isn't afraid to engage physically. During his 2022-23 season campaign, he registered 38 points with 7 goals and 31 assist in 37 games played.
"Maverick was the best player available. He's a 6-foot-four, 190-pound, defenceman that skates well, moves the puck well, and has a physical edge to his play. This year he also played up in Junior Hockey a few times and he looked right at home. We are excited to see what he'll bring to camp."
Joey Brehmer, the Wolves second round pick, is a 6'2, 177lbs., centre from Waterloo, ON. Joey helped lead his team through two tournament wins this season. He displays a high-level compete, plays in all situations and is a big body who can thrive playing in the dirty areas. During his 2022-23 season he registered 17 goals, 14 assists and 12 penalty minutes through 39 games.
"Joey is a player who we had our eye on all year," said Papineau. "He's a player that brings an elite-level of compete, he's a quiet leader, shows up every shift, plays with a high-level of energy, and is a tough player to play against, but he doesn't cross the line. Every shift he's engaged but doesn't take the unnecessary penalties and he's got a great touch, scoring 17 goals this season. Our scouting team was excited to see he was there at 28th and we look forward to seeing what he'll bring to camp," added Papineau.
The Sudbury Wolves have a history of great success with the U18 OHL Priority Selection since it's introduction in 2017. The Wolves' U18 selections, combined have played the most games across any team in the league with 429 games played. These players include Emmett Serensits, Mitchell Weeks, Nick DeGrazia, and Nate Krawchuk.
