Kitchener, Ont. - The NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning announced Wednesday that they have reassigned Kitchener Rangers defenceman Roman Schmidt to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, Syracuse (N.Y.) Crunch.

Schmidt, 20, has spent the last two seasons in Kitchener, earning 61 points (15G, 46A) in 132 games with the Rangers. Born in Midland, Mich., Schmidt spent two years with the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP), where he recorded 50 points (16G, 34A) in 147 games before committing to Kitchener.

The right-shot defenceman played his AAA youth hockey with the Don Mills Flyers and the Mississauga Rebels in the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) prior to being picked by Kitchener in the second round (36th overall) of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.

A six-foot-five, 215-pound blueliner, Schmidt was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the third-round (96th overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft before signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Lightning on Dec. 9, 2021.

The Tampa Bay Lightning currently trail the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 in the first-round playoff series. The Syracuse Crunch have a 2-0 series lead over the Rochester Americans (Buffalo Sabres) in the second round of the AHL Playoffs.
