Mohegan Wolves News Release

NEW LONDON, Conn. (April 10, 2003) – The Mohegan Wolves (arenafootball2) face their first road test of the 2003 season when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, PA to take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers tomorrow night. The Wolves are looking to keep up the momentum gained from their season-opening win over the Rochester Brigade on April 5.

Wolves Game One Recap – 4/5/03 - In last weekend's game versus the Brigade, the Wolves jumped out to a quick 25-0 first quarter lead en route to the team's most convincing win in team history. Mohegan WR/LB and game MVP Kazmell Minott scored three touchdowns during the stretch, sparking the Wolves to their 57-20 victory at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Wolves win was just their second home win and fourth win overall in team history. Minott's first two scores of the night came on the receiving end of rookie QB Rob Harding's first two throws of his af2 career. On the team's first play from scrimmage, Harding hooked up with Minott for a 28-yard score. On the Wolves second possession, Harding found Minott again, this time with a 13-yard scoring pass. Minott's third touchdown of the quarter came on an 11-yard return run after a blocked field goal attempt by Rochester kicker Charles Eger. DS Allistair Sebastien also scored at the 7:35 mark of the quarter on a 48-yard interception return.

Fellow DS Andre Weathers also had a strong showing for the Wolves. In his af2 debut, the former New York Giant had two interceptions, and returned his second one 14 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Mohegan's two other touchdowns came on 1-yard runs from FB/LB LaJhon Jones and QB Ryan Tracey.

This Friday's matchup at a glance - Mohegan Wolves @ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton leads the head-to-head series with the Wolves, 3-0 overall. All three games were played in 2002. In 2003, these two teams will tussle three times as well. After Friday's road game, the Wolves will host the Pioneers the next two times they play, on June 14 and July 18. Last season Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finished 6-10 overall, missing the playoffs by one game. This year the Pioneers feature former New Haven Ninjas QB Chris Boden. Boden led the Ninjas with 1,711 yards passing and 37 touchdowns in 2002. This week the Wolves will look to another rookie QB to lead them, Ryan Tracey from UConn. After Mohegan starter Rob Harding went down with a knee injury in the second quarter of game one vs. Rochester, Tracey came in and responded like a veteran, completing 5-of-5 passes in the second half for 60 yards. Tracey also scored a rushing touchdown in his af2 debut. Backing up Tracey will be former Charleston QB Mike Bath. Bath was activated from refused to report on Tuesday, the same day the Wolves placed Harding on long term injured reserve.
