Wolves Edge Admirals for Fifth Straight Amtrak Victory

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Goaltender Pheonix Copley made 35 saves to backstop the Chicago Wolves to a 2-1 Amtrak Rivalry victory over the Milwaukee Admirals on Wednesday night at Allstate Arena. The win is the Wolves' and Copley's fifth consecutive triumph over the Admirals.
Rookie defenseman Vince Dunn picked up his seventh goal of the season and blueliner Morgan Ellis nabbed his third of the season to give the Wolves (22-12-3-2) a 2-0 advantage. Copley's bid for his second shutout of the year lasted until Milwaukee's Justin Florek netted a goal with just 35 seconds left.
"We needed him, that's for sure," said Wolves head coach Craig Berube. "We were just OK tonight. We didn't have much going, but 'Cops' was really good."
Chicago opened the scoring at 8:26 of the first period. On the power play, defenseman Jordan Schmaltz moved the puck to Dunn, and he wired a center-point chance past Marek Mazanec (7-6-1).
In a defensive grudge match, the Wolves broke through again at 10:53 of the final frame when Magnus Paajarvi fed a pass to Ellis speeding to the top of the right offensive circle from the blue line for a one-time shot that beat Mazanec on the stick side.
In the dying minutes of the game, Milwaukee pulled their netminder. Following a center-point shot down the slot, the Admirals crashed the net and Florek was the player to poke the puck across the goal line behind Copley (10-4-2).
Mazanec turned aside 14 of 16 shots he faced in the loss.
The Wolves head north of the border for a pair of games with the Manitoba Moose at 7 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 13) and 2 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 15). Both contests will broadcast live on The U Too in the Chicago area.
Chicago returns home to Allstate Arena on Saturday, Jan. 21, and Sunday, Jan. 22, against the Milwaukee Admirals. Puck drop for the Jan. 21 contest is set for 7 p.m., and the Amtrak Rivalry clash will be broadcast on CW50.
