Wolf Pack Take Down Bruins in OT

January 10, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Connecticut Whale News Release

Providence, RI, January 10, 2010 - Paul Crowder's goal at 2:06 of overtime gave the Hartford Wolf Pack a 2-1 win over the Providence Bruins Sunday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Providence.

Providence goaltender Kevin Regan stopped Dane Byers' shot from the left-wing side, but Crowder whacked the rebound in from in front. The goal was the rookie Crowder's first career pro game-winner, and his ninth goal of the season.

The victory moved the Wolf Pack into sole possession of fourth place in the Atlantic Division, with 47 points (21-15-1-4).

The two teams battled through a scoreless first period, with Providence holding an 11-9 shots advantage. The majority of Providence's shots came on their one power play of the period, which came courtesy of a hooking penalty against Hartford's Bobby Sanguinetti at 12:28. Shortly after the penalty kill, the Wolf Pack had their best sequence of the period, as a line of Devin DiDiomete, Crowder and Derek Couture kept the Bruins bottled up in their end for the better part of two minutes, and generated four shots on goal.

The scoreless tie lasted until the 12:56 mark of the second period, when the Wolf Pack power play cashed in on its second opportunity of the game.

Sanguinetti's shot from the left point was stopped by Regan (27 saves), but Dale Weise, camped in front of the goal, flipped the rebound in. The goal extended Weise's goal-scoring streak to a Wolf Pack season-high four games (5-0-5) and was his sixth in the last six games and 15th of the season.

The Wolf Pack came close to making that goal stand up as the winner, but the Bruins would finally break through against Pack goaltender Chad Johnson with 3:40 remaining in the third period.

Just two seconds after Byers finished serving a tripping penalty, the Bruins' Zach Hamill poked the puck past Johnson off of a goalmouth scramble.

Johnson stoppped 30 of 31 Providence shots in the game for his third straight AHL win, after being returned to the Wolf Pack by the parent New York Rangers Saturday night.

The triumph was the Wolf Pack's fifth overtime win of the season, and the Pack have won six of their last eight games and have at least a standings point in 10 of their last 13 (8-3-0-2).

The Wolf Pack are now off until this Saturday night, when they face a rematch with the Bruins at the XL Center. That is "Faith and Family Night", and faceoff is 7:00.
