Wolf Pack Name Hutchinson Team Captain
January 26, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Connecticut Whale News Release
HARTFORD: Hartford Wolf Pack general manager Jim Schoenfeld announced today that the team has named defenseman Andrew Hutchinson team captain. The designation was made as a result of a vote taken among the Wolf Pack players.
Hutchinson, who is in his sixth year of pro hockey, assumes the honor of being the third player to wear the "C" for the Wolf Pack. He follows current Pack head coach Ken Gernander, who captained the squad for the first eight years of its existence, and Craig Weller, captain of the team from January 16, 2006 through the end of the 2006-07 season.
The parent New York Rangers acquired Hutchinson from the Carolina Hurricanes July 17, 2007, along with Joe Barnes and a third-round draft pick in 2008, in exchange for Matt Cullen. The former Michigan State University Spartan spent the last two seasons all in the NHL with the Hurricanes, and was a member of Carolina's Stanley Cup-winning 2005-06 team. The 27-year-old Evanston, Illinois native also won a Calder Cup in the AHL with the Milwaukee Admirals in 2003-04.
Originally drafted in the second round (54th overall) by the Nashville Predators in 1999, Hutchinson has played in 95 career NHL games (77 with Carolina and 18 with Nashville) and registered 10 goals and 23 assists for 33 points, along with 52 penalty minutes. In 231 overall AHL games with the Wolf Pack and Milwaukee, Hutchinson has struck for 39 goals and 90 assists for 129 points, plus 200 PIM. With the Wolf Pack this year, he has totaled eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points, along with 42 penalty minutes, in 41 games. That is good for second on the club in assists and fourth in points, and Hutchinson ranks third overall among AHL defensemen in assists and fourth in points.
The Wolf Pack play their last game before the AHL All-Star break tonight at the XL Center, as they host the league-leading Providence Bruins in a 7:00 game, on "Al Montoya Bobblehead Night". The first 5,000 fans into the game receive a bobblehead of the Wolf Pack's third-year pro goaltender.
