Adirondack Phantoms News Release

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. - Jeff Tambellini scored a shorthanded goal with 47.5 seconds left in regulation and Mike Morrison blanked the Philadelphia Phantoms in the shootout to give Bridgeport a 4-3 shootout win on Saturday night.

The teams traded goals throughout the game, with each club picking up a goal in each period. In the first, it was Jonathan Matsumoto scoring for Philadelphia on the power play 2:10 into the contest, He was answered 81 seconds later by Kyle Okposo, who tied the game for the remainder of the period.

For as early as the goals were in the first period, they were both late In the second, Bridgeport took its first lead of the game with 2:50 remaining. Matt Keith had the puck in the left wing circle and held for several seconds looking to shoot. He coasted through the slot and into the bottom of the right-wing circle, waiting for Boucher to commit, and went high when the netminder did so.

But Kyle Greentree responded 80 seconds later for Philadelphia. He carried a puck down the left wing side and threw it in front at the top of the crease. It hit a defender in front and fell to Nate Guenin, who stuffed it in.

Matsumoto's second of the evening gave Philadelphia a 3-2 lead with 8:51 to play in regulation. He fired home the rebound of a Josh Beaulieu shot for the advantage.

With 1:04 to play, Drew Fata drew an extra roughing penalty in an altercation with Triston Grant, giving the Phantoms the chance to wrap up the game on the power play. But Tambellini and Steve Regier had other ideas. Reiger had a puck in the left circle of the Phantoms end and fed a pass to the right circle for Tambellini, who sent a one-timer past the right post before Brian Boucher could get back to that side. The last-minute goal tied the game at 3-3 and forced extra time.

Morrison excelled in the post-regulation affair. He denied Matsumoto on a breakaway in the final seconds of overtime and then proceeded to stop all four Phantoms shooters in the shootout. Brigeport scored twice in the extra-extra to secure the additional standings point.

Philadelphia's lead over the three teams immediately behind them in the East Division shrunk to seven as Albany, Hershey and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton all won on the evening. The Phantoms head into the All-Star break with a record of 29-15-1-2 for 61 points.

The game concluded a month of January in which the Phantoms played 14 games in 23 days. The team went 7-5-0-2 during the stretch, recording 16 of a possible 28 points for a winning percentage of .571.

The AHL's All-Star break runs until next Wednesday, but the Phantoms don't take the ice again until Friday, Feb. 2 when they host the Worcester Sharks at the Wachovia Spectrum.
