Albany Devils News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - The Lowell Devils were shutout for the second consecutive game as they fell to the Portland Pirates, 2-0, at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday night. This time, it was goaltender J.P. Lavasseaur who was perfect in between the pipes, making 21 saves for his second shutout of the year.
The Pirates received a golden opportunity to take an early lead when they received a four-minute power play in the opening minutes of the first period. Though the Devils were able to kill off the first minor, Portland converted when Bobby Ryan rang a shot off the post with Drew Miller stationed in the crease to tuck home the rebound at 5:33. That would be the only goal for either team as they skated into the first intermission.
As was the case the previous night, Lowell trailed by only one after a scoreless period only to see the opposition to pull away. A turnover in the defensive zone left Jason King alone in front where he flipped the puck over Frank Doyle's glove to make the score 2-0 at 3:34 of the third. The Devils could not get their comeback started, managing only four shots in the final frame.
Doyle made 30 saves as his team's winless streak extended to eight games. The Devils were 0-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. Lowell has now gone seven periods without a goal for a total of 140:22.
The Devils will be back at home on Saturday, February 2 to battle the Springfield Falcons at 7:05 p.m. Tickets start at just $10; call the Devils office at (978) 458-PUCK for more information or visit www.lowelldevilshockey.com. The 2008 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Reebok will take place at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena ! in Binghamton, N.Y. The event will begin with the 2008 CCM AHL! All-Sta r Skills Competition on January 27, and conclude with the 2008 AHL All-Star Game on January 28.
