Wizards Surpass 5,000 Season Ticket Mark

Sporting Kansas City News Release

KANSAS CITY, MO (March 7, 2003) - Kansas City Wizards General Manager Curt Johnson and Founder Lamar Hunt announced today that Wizards season ticket sales have surpassed the 5,000 mark for the first time in franchise history. In the past two days, the Wizards have received commitments from Gates Bar-B-Que, Hermes Landscaping and the VFW National Office among others, to move past the milestone and bring the current total to 5,026 season tickets. With these three significant commitments, 96 Kansas City organizations have now purchased premier season ticket packages during the past three months of the campaign.

In the past two weeks, Kansas City season ticket sales have moved quickly past the 2002 totals of the MLS teams representing the nations two largest markets - the Los Angeles Galaxy and the (New York) MetroStars - as well as the Colorado Rapids. On February 14 the Wizards shattered their franchise record of 4,115 season tickets, a record that had stood since the Wizards' inaugural season in 1996.

"We are very proud of the results that have been achieved and our organization is continuing to work very hard," said Johnson. "Kansas City is currently in the top echelon in Major League Soccer and have a legitimate shot at finishing on top."

In November of last year, Wizards Founder Lamar Hunt suggested a campaign to "Match the MLS Best" season ticket totals from the 2002 season. Last season the Columbus Crew led the league with 7,316 season tickets. Now nearly 70% of the way to their goal with five weeks remaining until the 2003 season opener, the Wizards trail the season ticket totals of just three teams from 2002 - the New England Revolution (5,284), D.C. United (6,460) and the Columbus Crew (7,316).

The Wizards open the 2003 season on Saturday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. CT when they host D.C. United at Arrowhead Stadium.
