Sporting Kansas City News Release
The Kansas City Wizards travel to Morelia, Mexico this week to face Monarcas Morelia in the first leg of the 2002 Champions Cup Semifinal series on Wednesday, August 7th. The Wizards and Morelia will kickoff in their first ever meeting at 3:00 p.m. CT from Estadio Morelos. Fans can follow the game via MatchTracker by logging on to www.MLSnet.com.
While the Wizards make their first trip to Morelia, they are no strangers to Mexico. Kansas City has played in Torreon, Mexico on two separate occasions against Santos Laguna. The Wizards first trip to Mexico came nearly one year ago to the day as the Wizards and Santos Laguna squared off on August 8, 2001 in the Copa Merconorte tournament. The Wizards lost that meeting 4-2. They returned to face Santos Laguna again in Torreon on April 10, 2002 in the Quarterfinals of the Champions Cup, and faced a similar result, losing 2-1. Despite the Quarterfinal loss to Santos Laguna in Mexico, the Wizards rebounded to win 2-0 at Arrowhead on April 24th and advanced to the Semifinal round against Morelia. Kansas City opened the 2002 Champions Cup in March with back-to-back shutouts of W Connection FC to advance to the Quarterfinals against Santos Laguna.
Morelia earned the right to play in the Semifinals after defeating the Chicago Fire 3-2 on aggregate goals over two games in early July. Morelia opened the Champions Cup dropping Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica 3-1 on aggregate goals.
Kansas City and Morelia will play the second leg of their two-game series at Arrowhead Stadium on Wednesday, August 28th with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT. Ticket prices for the Champions Cup match at Arrowhead will be the same as regular season games, $17 adults and $12 youth Sideline Reserve and $12 adults and $8 youth General Admission. Season Ticket Holders may use their "Special Game C" ticket. For information on tickets, call the Wizards office at 816-920-9300.
The winner of the Wizards and Morelia series will face the winner of the Alajuelense (Costa Rica) and Pachuca (Mexico) series. Alajuelense will host the first leg of the series on Wednesday, August 14th at Estadio Marrero Soto, while Pachuca will host the second leg at Estadio Hidalgo on Wednesday, August 21st. Both games will kick off at 8:00 p.m. CT.
