FC Dallas News Release
Frisco, Texas. (Sunday, April 23, 2006) - It was a roller coaster of a match but unfortunately the Kansas City Wizards (3-1-0, 9 pts.) wound up in a valley, falling 2-1 to FC Dallas (3-0-1, 10 pts.) in extra-time. Entering this afternoon's match with the maximum nine points, the Wizards suffered their first setback of 2006 and have a short week to regroup before heading to Columbus on Saturday, April 29th for a match against the Crew.
Kenny Cooper netted an early goal for Dallas after a scrum in front of the net that knocked goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi to the ground in the fourth minute for a 1-0 lead for the home side. Following a cross into the box, defender Jimmy Conrad and Hoops forward Carlos Ruiz rolled into the Oshoniyi, leaving the Wizards' net wide open for Cooper.
After nearly 90 minutes of action in which Kansas City possessed much of the play, the Wizards' Alex Zotinca rifled in a Jose Luis Burciaga Jr. corner kick from the back side, beating Hoops goalkeeper Dario Sala low and to the far post in the 92nd minute. Kansas City earned the corner kick when defender Nick Garcia pushed forward deep into Dallas' defensive zone and had the ball poked away just as he neared the touchline on the right side.
With the final whistle looming as the five minutes of stoppage time were about to expire, the Hoops' Aaron Pitchkolan found himself in the right place at the right time. Pitchkolan blocked a pass out of the back and hammered home the rebound in the fourth minute of stoppage time for the win. The play began when he stepped in front of an attempted clearance by Burciaga Jr. and the rebound fell right into his path as he was running into the box. Blanketed by Conrad, Pitchkolan unleashed and shot from 20-yards out that beat Oshoniyi who could only get his fingertips on the curving shot.
The Wizards travel back to Kansas City for a short week of training before departing for Columbus for next Saturday's match vs. the Crew on April 29 at 6:30 p.m. CT. Kansas City will then return to Arrowhead to host the Chicago Fire one week later, Saturday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. CT.
