Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Travis Witherspoon's solo home run with two outs in the ninth inning gave the Arkansas Travelers a 4-3 win in the opening game of a four-game series against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Monday night.
Witherspoon hit his fourth home run of the season on a 1-0 pitch from Naturals reliever Matt Ridings to give the Travelers their fourth consecutive win. Northwest Arkansas had a chance to take the lead in the top half of the inning, but Travelers' left fielder Jett Bandy threw out Roman Hernandez at the plate for the final out of the inning. Hernandez was trying to score on an Alex Llanos single.
The Travelers took the lead in the second inning on a Witherspoon single that scored Randal Grichuk. After being shut out in their previous start against Lay Batista, the Naturals tied the game in the fifth inning on a Hernandez groundout that scored Yem Prades. Prades advanced to third earlier in the at-bat on a Batista wild pitch.
Bandy gave the Travs the lead back in the bottom of the fifth with his first home run of the season. A double by Prades tied the score in the seventh, with the Naturals taking a 3-2 lead in the eighth on a Rey Navarro home run. C.J. Cron tied the game in the bottom half of the eighth with a two-out single, setting up the eventful final inning.
Navarro went two-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored. Prades and Hernandez each doubled for the Naturals, who had seven hits off of three Travelers pitchers.
Kevin Johnson earns his second win of 2013 for the Travelers. Johnson allowed one run on three hits with a strikeout in two innings. Batista had his second straight quality start against the Naturals, allowing one unearned run on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts in six innings.
Riding s takes his first Double-A loss for the Naturals. Ridings surrendered one run on two hits with three strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Brooks Pounders gave up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in five innings while making his second start of the season.
Jason Adam (0-3, 9.88 ERA) looks for his first Double-A win tomorrow night against Matt Grube (4-1, 3.12 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
