Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - 3B Patrick Wisdom launched a two-run home run in the sixth to make it just a one-run game, but the Arkansas Travelers escaped with a 3-2 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 3,038 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park on Sunday night.
Arkansas (12-11, 48-44) opened the early advantage with all three of their unearned runs in the bottom of the first against RHP Andrew Morales (L, 4-6). With one down, SS Eric Stamets reached on a throwing error charged to SS Aledmys Diaz. Morales responded with a quick strikeout of LF Blake Gailen, but then 3B Brian Hernandez cracked the scoreless tie with a two-run double. Hernandez took third on a base hit from 1B Wade Hinkle, followed by an RBI single from RF Cal Towey. DH Raywilly Gomez brought in the next run with an RBI base hit to plate Hinkle from second. After a walk to CF Jared Mitchell reloaded the bases with two away, RHP Chris Perry took over on the mound and quickly induced an inning-ending fly out, getting the Cardinals out of the first only down, 3-0.
Perry went on to quiet the Travelers bats through his next three scoreless innings, finishing with 3.1 shutout frames on the mound. LHP Ryan Sherriff took over for the fifth and posted a scoreless inning around a single, before the Cardinals broke through.
Arkansas RHP Kyle McGowin (W, 5-7), who had no-hit the Cardinals (11-12, 41-52) through his first 3.1 innings, kept Springfield off the board until a two-out rally in the top of the sixth. LF Matt Williams initially extended the stanza by beating out a play at first base for an infield single. 3B Patrick Wisdom then belted a two-run home run, his team-leading 11th of the year, over the left field fence, swinging the Cardinals within just one run of tying it, 3-2.
Sherriff kept the deficit at just one run with a scoreless bottom of the sixth, before RHP Josh Lucas followed suit with two scoreless innings of his own, retiring all six batters that he faced in order.
With Arkansas RHP Eduard Santos in his second inning to start the top of the ninth, the Cardinals attempted another late rally. Santos had erased a leadoff walk by inducing a double play, but 2B Bruce Caldwell kept the game alive with a two-out free pass. SS Aledmys Diaz then chopped a single through the left side, putting two men on with two away and chasing Santos from the mound. With the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first, LHP Greg Mahle (S, 9) replaced Santos to face RF David Washington. Mahle won the battle, dealing a game-ending strikeout and the Travelers escaped with the 3-2 win.
