Winterhawks WIN on Mother's Day to Take 2-0 Series Lead against Seattle

Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - The story from Game 1 rolled right into Game 2 as the Winterhawks struck late - this time shorthanded - to take a 2-1 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Sunday.

The Winterhawks now hold a 2-0 series lead with Game 3 set for Wednesday night at 7:00 P.M. at the VMC.

Gabe Klassen grabbed the game-winner after an excellent individual effort from Jaydon Dureau gave the Hawks some offensive zone time while on the penalty kill. Dureau carried the puck in on Thomas Milic, who then attempted to play it to a defenseman, but was intercepted by Dureau once more for a quick cross-ice pass through a pair of Thunderbirds for Klassen on the back door at 16:22 of the third.

Seattle scored first for the second straight game when Lucas Ciona converted at 9:05 of the first, but Portland again knotted things up in the second behind Tyson Kozak's first of the postseason. Cross Hanas found Robbie Fromm-Delorme out front from behind the net for a quick shot which rebounded to Kozak at the side of the net.

The third period see-sawed back and forth for 10 minutes before the teams began to parade to the penalty box. Following a pair of strong kills from both sides, Seattle again went on the man-advantage at 14:51 with a chance to go ahead, but coughed up the game-winning goal to Klassen instead.

Taylor Gauthier remained solid with 28 saves on 29 shots in Portland's win.
