Winterhawks Weekly: Home Sweet Home
January 16, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland kicked off the Saskatchewan swing with two strong midweek wins over Prince Albert and Saskatoon, but stumbled late in Moose Jaw and dropped a heartbreaker after a late tying tally was disallowed in Regina. Still, a handful of hometown heroes in Gabe Klassen and Braeden Jockims highlighted the victories and provided some special memories for the group.
Now, after a long ride back from Regina, the Hawks are back in the VMC for two games this week, including Where's Waldo Night against Victoria on Friday and Sippin' Saturday against Lethbridge!
Hot Hawks:
Forward Robbie Fromm-Delorme found the scoresheet in all four games last week and lit the lamp in three of those, wrapping up his road trip with four goals and two assists. The Hawks' leading scorer is up to 21 goals, 27 assists and 48 points in 38 games.
Forward Gabe Klassen once again led Winterhawks skaters in scoring with 2G-4A last week, including an impressive three-point effort to pace Portland's win in his hometown of Prince Albert.
Forward James Stefan picked up a goal in three straight games last week and added an assist on Tuesday. The Laguna Beach, Calif. native has points in 10 of 16 games since Dec. 1.
Forward Braeden Jockims tallied his first career goal in Saskatoon just one week after signing his SPA, pacing Portland's 3-1 win over the Blades on Wednesday.
Play of the Week:
Every first goal is a special one, but Braeden Jockims' was something out of a movie. After making his WHL debut in Prince Albert on Tuesday, the Saskatoon, Sask. native skated in his second game in front of friends and family in his hometown - and notched the game-winner in the process. What a moment for Portland's #8!
Weekly Rewind:
Portland 5 at Prince Albert 3 (Tuesday):
Gabe Klassen earned first-star honors with a goal and two assists in his hometown as the Winterhawks knocked off the Prince Albert Raiders by a 5-3 final on Tuesday night. Jan Špunar stopped 21 of 24 shots in the victory.
Portland 3 at Saskatoon 1 (Wednesday):
Braeden Jockims tallied the game-winner for his first WHL goal in his hometown as the Winterhawks topped the Saskatoon Blades 3-1 at SaskTel Centre on Wednesday.
Portland 2 at Moose Jaw 4 (Friday):
James Stefan stretched his goal-scoring streak to three games, but Eric Alarie's two tallies and Connor Ungar's 42 saves gave the Moose Jaw Warriors a 4-2 victory over the Winterhawks on Friday night.
Portland 3 at Regina 4 (Saturday):
Two goals from Connor Bedard in a three-goal second period helped the Regina Pats edge the Winterhawks by a 4-3 final on Saturday night. Dante Giannuzzi finished with 34 saves for Portland.
