Winterhawks Weekly: Hawks Heat up During Busy Week

November 7, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Winterhawks thrived during a jam-packed week, picking up seven of eight possible points and sweeping a weekend three-in-three against Seattle and Spokane to move into first place in the Western Conference.

Portland hits the road this week for a pair of games in Victoria against the Royals on Friday and Saturday.

Hot Hawks:

Forward Robbie Fromm-Delorme shared the Winterhawks' scoring lead with seven points (2G, 5A) last week, including a multi-goal performance in Sunday's 8-7 win over Spokane.

Forward Jack O'Brien found the scoresheet in each of Portland's four games with three goals and three assists, highlighted by his two-goal, one-assist showing on Sunday.

Forward Gabe Klassen continues to score at a torrid pace. The Hawks captain struck once on Wednesday, then posted back-to-back three-point outings on Saturday (2G, 1A) and Sunday (1G, 2A). His 13 goals rank tied for second among all WHL skaters.

Forward James Stefan bagged one goal and six assists in four games last week. Stefan posted two assists and a goal in the first three games before erupting for four assists on Sunday. He enters the week on a six-game point streak.

Defenseman Ryan McCleary showed off his offensive touch with points in all four games last week, including a goal just 20 seconds into Friday's contest and his first multi-point (1G, 1A) outing of the season on Sunday.

Defenseman Luca Cagnoni tallied the shootout winner on Sunday and led all Winterhawks defensemen with two goals and four assists last week, notching three consecutive multi-point performances on Friday (2A), Saturday (1G, 1A) and Sunday (1G, 1A).

Play of the Week:

The Winterhawks' power play was electric last week, operating at over a 50% pace with 11 goals on 21 opportunities across the four games, including this slick passing play for Gabe Klassen's second of the night in Seattle on Saturday. After Klassen corrals the puck behind the net and feeds James Stefan at the left-wing boards, Stefan fires a seam pass to Luca Cagnoni at the right circle for another quick seam pass to a wide-open Klassen for a backdoor tap-in.

Weekly Rewind:

Portland 4 vs Prince George 5 SO (Wednesday):

Marcus Nguyen scored twice and Gabe Klassen tallied his team-leading 10th goal of the season, but the Winterhawks fell short in the shootout as the Prince George Cougars picked up a 5-4 victory following the breakaway contest.

Portland 5 vs Seattle 1 (Friday):

Four consecutive goals and a steady 28-save performance from Dante Giannuzzi carried the Portland Winterhawks past the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-1 on Friday night.

Portland 5 at Seattle 3 (Saturday):

Gabe Klassen scored twice and the Portland power play sizzled as the Winterhawks knocked off the Seattle Thunderbirds for the second night in a row, this time by a 5-3 final score. Jan Špunar turned aside 25 of 28 shots in the victory.

Portland 8 vs Spokane 7 SO (Sunday):

Jack O'Brien and Robbie Fromm-Delorme each tallied twice as the Winterhawks took an 8-7 shootout win over Spokane in a bizarre, back-and-forth game at the VMC.

Portland now holds sole possession of first place in the Western Conference with the victory.
