Winterhawks Weekly: Adversity in Alberta

October 31, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Winterhawks hit the highway for the start of their Central Division swing last week and found some rough roads along the way, with their first consecutive losses of the season in Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary.

Winterhawk One now travels to Medicine Hat for a midweek battle against the Tigers, before heading to Swift Current on Friday and Lethbridge on Saturday.

Hot Hawks:

Forward Diego Buttazzoni picked up assists in all three games last week to push his season-long point streak to 12 games. The Langley, B.C. native has already set career-highs in goals (8) and points (16) this season, his first as an NHL Draft-eligible skater.

Forward Kyle Chyzowski scored in Red Deer to stretch his goal-scoring streak to three games, then bounced back from a goose-egg on Saturday with another tally and an assist on Sunday in Calgary. The 19-year-old ranks second in team scoring with nine goals and 16 points on the year.

Forward Josh Davies put up an assist in Edmonton, then potted a pair of points in his hometown of Calgary on Sunday, including a highlight-reel goal in the third period. Davies has 10 points in eight games to start his Winterhawks tenure.

Forward Marcus Nguyen snapped a five-game goalless skid in a big way last weekend, scoring twice in Edmonton and adding another in front of friends and family in Calgary on Sunday. The speedy sniper has 11 points in 10 games this season.

Play of the Week:

Marcus Nguyen was absolutely On One™Ã¯Â¸Â last weekend, putting on quite the show in his home province with three goals in two games. Here's our favorite: a home-run stretch pass from Jack O'Brien hits Nguyen perfectly in stride during the game against the Oil Kings. Bonus: enjoy the overhead angle from the NHL-caliber jumbotron camera at Rogers Place.

Weekly Rewind:

Portland 1 at Red Deer 2 (Friday):

The Winterhawks scored first, but two power-play goals and 35 saves from Red Deer netminder Kyle Kelsey gave the Rebels a 2-1 win on Friday.

Portland 4 at Edmonton 5 (Saturday):

Marcus Nguyen scored twice for Portland, but a four-goal second stanza helped the Edmonton Oil Kings hold off the Hawks for a 5-4 win at Rogers Place on Saturday.

Portland 4 at Calgary 7 (Sunday):

The Winterhawks fired over 60 shots on net and a pair of Calgary natives scored in their hometown, but their late comeback bid fell short as the Hitmen took a 7-4 win at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday.

The Week Ahead:

The loooooong road trip rolls on with three games this week!

First up, a Wednesday night clash with Gavin McKenna and the Medicine Hat Tigers. The top 2026(!) NHL Draft prospect is already turning heads at just 15 years old with 38 points in 30 WHL games thus far. Puck drop is set for 6:00 P.M. Pacific Time for that contest.

Then, on Friday, the Hawks cross the border to Saskatchewan to take on the Swift Current Broncos. It's a homecoming for forward Josh Davies, who spent the prior three seasons with the Broncos before coming to the Rose City via trade this summer. Tune in at 6:00 P.M. Pacific Time to catch the action.

Wrapping up the week, Portland's back in Alberta to complete the Central Division portion of this road trip against the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 5:00 P.M. Pacific Time. The Hawks took the lone game against the Hurricanes at the VMC last season, and will be keen to do so again in the reverse matchup.
