Winterhawks Unveil Portland Buckaroos Throwback Uniform for 'Jersey off Their Backs'
March 14, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Buckaroos are back! The Portland Winterhawks today announced a specialty Portland Buckaroos-inspired uniform to be worn this Saturday, March 18, for Oregon Hockey History Night. The jerseys will also be raffled off during this year's WAHA "Jersey Off Their Backs" Night on March 24.
Modeled after the Buckaroos' 1936-edition sweater, the jersey features a black base with a thick red stripe through the center and an off-center logo placed in the lower-left portion of the torso. The logo used on this sweater is an updated version of the one used by the Buckaroos in the 1960's, combining multiple eras of Oregon hockey history in one uniform.
Players' names and numbers adorn the back in white block text, while the Buckaroos' alternate "P" logo and WAHA logo highlight the shoulders of each sweater. Felt-pattern accents surround the jersey crest and numbers to resemble the material used on the original uniforms.
The 1936 Buckaroos sweater (left) and this year's remixed version (right) hang side by side.
The jerseys will only be worn during this Saturday's Oregon Hockey History Night with replica versions available for sale in the team store that night. In addition, authentic Buckaroos memorabilia will be on display on the concourse outside Entry MM during this Saturday's game for Winterhawks to view and learn about Portland's unique hockey history.
Fans interested in game-worn sweaters from this Saturday's game can also click here to purchase Jersey Off Their Backs raffle tickets from WAHA for their chance to win a jersey from a Winterhawks player following the game on March 24. Raffle tickets cost $10 each or you can purchase a limited golden ticket for $1,250 at the WAHA table on the concourse at a future home game to guarantee winning one of the game-worn jerseys.
