Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks, proud member club of the Western Hockey League, are pleased to announce the signing of prospect Hudson Darby to a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

Darby signs with Portland after being selected in the fifth round, #103 overall, in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft. The Swift Current, Sask. native is a skilled and intelligent forward who enjoyed a successful season with the Swift Current Legionnaires U18 AAA program.

Darby (5-10, 160 lbs.) ranked second on his team with 14 goals and 36 points in 43 games and was named Rookie of the Year during the Legionnaires' end-of-season team award ceremony. The Legionnaires also helped develop current Winterhawk and Pittsburgh Penguins prospect, Ryan McCleary, for two seasons from 2018-2020.

"Hudson is a competitive forward who wins his share of battles and has demonstrated an ability to finish. We like his intensity and steady progress during this season," Assistant to the General Manager and Director of Scouting Mike Coflin told Winterhawks.com after Portland selected him.

Prior to being selected by Portland in the draft, Darby posted 42 points in 33 games with the Swift Current Broncos U15 team from 2018-20. Also of note, Hudson's father, Regan Darby, was drafted by the Spokane Chiefs with the #51 overall pick in the 1995 WHL Prospects Draft and played 158 career WHL games.

Darby becomes the fourth player from the 2006 class to sign with the Winterhawks, joining Luke Brunen, Cole Cairns, and Carsyn Dyck.
