Winterhawks Select Nine in Bantam Draft

The Western Hockey League held its annual Bantam Draft today, and the Portland Winterhawks selected nine players.

"I am very happy with the selections we made in today's Bantam Draft," said Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Jamie Kompon. "Our scouts did a great job identifying the players that we selected. They have the qualities we are looking for in a Portland Winterhawk."

The team's first pick came in the fourth round, 70th overall, as they selected forward Ty Kolle from Kamloops, British Columbia. Kolle had six goals and 12 assists for a team-high 18 points in 18 games this season with Okanagan Hockey of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League.

In the fifth round, 105th overall, the Hawks took forward Bradley Ginnell from Calgary, Alberta. Last season he had 24 goals and 20 assists for 44 points in 33 games with the Calgary Royals Bantam AAA team of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Portland's sixth round pick, 127th overall, was defenseman Stanislav Demin from Cypress, California. He played last season for the Anaheim Junior Ducks Bantam AAA team, registering a goal and five assists for six points in 15 games.

The Hawks then selected defenseman Nicholas Cicek from Winnipeg in the seventh round, 149th overall. Cicek had 14 assists in 29 games this season with the Winnipeg Monarchs Bantam AAA team in the Winnipeg Bantam AAA League.

In the eighth round, with the 171st pick, Portland selected defenseman Ilijah Colina from the Burnaby Winter Club's Tier 1 Bantam AAA Team.

The team's ninth round pick, 193rd overall was, forward Jonathan Rees, who had four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 18 games with Okanagan Hockey. He was a teammate of fourth round pick Ty Kolle.

In the 10th round, with the 215th pick, the Hawks selected defenseman Noah Kim, who played with the Los Angeles Junior Kings Bantam AAA team this season.

Portland's 11th round pick, 237th overall, was Justin Paul, a forward who posted 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points in 33 games with the Sherwood Park (Alberta) Flyers Bantam AAA team of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

The team's 12th round pick was defenseman Dawson Klein from Lakeville South High School in Lakeville, MN, who had four points this season.
