September 22, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club today announced that they have reassigned 16-year-old goaltender Luke Brunen to the Warman Wildcats U18 program in the Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL).
Brunen, selected 36th overall by the Winterhawks in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, appeared in three preseason games with the Hawks this month and stopped 35 of the 45 shots he faced against Seattle, Everett and Spokane.
Last season, Brunen was named to the Canadian Elite Hockey League U18 First All-Rookie Team after a standout season in Warman, posting a 15-5-0 with two shutouts, a 2.54 goals-against-average and a .901 save percentage. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound goaltender from Warman, Sask. will once again play for the Wildcats alongside signed Winterhawks prospect Carsyn Dyck. Brunen is eligible to play 10 WHL games this season as an affiliate player with Portland.
The Winterhawks' roster now stands at 25 players, not counting players currently away at NHL camps.
