
Winterhawks Outlast Americans 6-2

Portland, OR- The Tri-City Americans (28-35-0-3, 59 pts) were looking for two points to improve its playoff chances, but fell once again to the Portland Winterhawks (39-20-2-3, 83 pts) 6-2 in front of 10,390 at Moda Center on Saturday night.
Portland gained momentum early, and capitalized seven minutes into the first, as Paul Bittner fired a wrist shot from the high slot into the goal for a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, the lead increased to 2-0 as Chase De Leo slapped a shot into the net on the power play. The Americans answered on the power play later in the period, as Richard Nejezchleb backhanded a rebound into the goal to cut the lead to 2-1. The Winterhawks answered right away, as Bittner notched his second of the game to increase the lead to 3-1 after one period.
Early in the second, Tri-City got off to a good start, as Jordan Topping fired a shot that lit the red lamp to bring the Americans within a goal. Portland had the shot advantage in the second, 17-9, and maintained the lead going into the third period.
In the third, the Americans tried to even the game, but midway through the third, Portland increased the lead to 4-2 on a power play goal from Miles Koules. Tri-City fought to get back into the game, but Skyler McKenzie scored a late goal to make it 5-2. Bittner scored late in the third to complete the hat trick and seal the win for Portland.
The Americans are now winless in eight games against the Winterhawks this season and have lost two straight games.
Tri-City spent 14 minutes in the penalty box and was 1-of-3 on the power play. Portland recorded 10 penalty minutes and was 3-of-5 on the power play.
Evan Sarthou made 46 saves in the loss while Adin Hill stopped 30 shots in the win.
The Americans have some time off to recover before playing a key game against the Prince George Cougars (28-33-2-3, 61 pts) on Friday, March 13, at Toyota Center. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. Tri-City won the last meeting between the two teams, 5-3, on Jan. 7, in Prince George.
