Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks defeated the visiting Vancouver Giants by a score of 3-1 Sunday in the team's third game in three days. Portland goaltender Ian Curtis stopped 51 of 52 Vancouver shots.

Curtis was outstanding in the first period, turning away all 17 Vancouver shots in the frame to keep the contest scoreless heading into the second period.

The Winterhawks got on the board 12:54 into the second when Oliver Gabriel beat Vancouver netminder Mark Segal for his sixth goal of the season, with an assist to Riley Boychuk. Gabriel has been playing extremely well of late, with five goals and three assists for eight points in 10 games in the month of January.

After a Vancouver goal was waved off five minutes into the third period, Portland went up 2-0 at the 13:39 mark when Boychuk fed Tayler Jordan in front of the net, who put it in for his second goal of the season. The Giants then thought they'd scored at the 17-minute mark, but the goal was overturned after a video review.

Vancouver's Craig Cunningham spoiled the shutout bid at the 17:39 mark to make it 2-1, leading to a wild finish, but the Winterhawks sealed the win after an empty net goal by Luke Walker to take the game 3-1.

The Winterhawks are off now until Friday, when they travel to Everett to take on the Silvertips. Their next home game is Saturday against the Seattle Thunderbirds at 7 p.m. at the Rose Garden.
