Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks advanced to the final of the MasterCard Memorial Cup with a 2-1 win over the London Knights Friday in the tournament's semifinal game at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon.

The Hawks will take on the Halifax Mooseheads Sunday at 4 p.m. Pacific time looking to win their first Memorial Cup since 1998, and third in franchise history.

After a scoreless first period, the London Knights struck first with a power play goal by Max Domi 12:43 into the second to make it 1-0. The lead was short-lived, as Tyler Wotherspoon scored on a shot from the point at the 14:51 mark to tie the game at 1-1, which remained the score going into the third.

Near the halfway point of the third the Winterhawks took a 2-1 lead when Ty Rattie fired a shot from the high slot that beat London netminder Jake Patterson. From there the Hawks slammed the door, preventing London from tying the game and finishing with the hard-fought victory.

Mac Carruth was outstanding in net, allowing just one goal on 35 shots. London's Jake Patterson made 32 saves on 34 shots.
