Winston-Salem Wastes May's Four Hits, Two Leads

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Jacob May tied a career-high with four hits, but they were not enough as the Carolina Mudcats rallied twice to top Winston-Salem 11-9 at BB&T Ballpark on Saturday night, snapping the Dash's four-game winning streak.
May tallied three singles, a triple, three stolen bases and three runs in the contest while extending his hitting streak to eight games. May's other four-hit night came on August 26, 2013, while he was a member of Low-A Kannapolis.
Carolina (5-5, 34-43) made its first comeback in the top of the fifth. Trailing 6-1, the Mudcats exploded for six runs while sending nine men to the plate. Jeremy Lucas' run-scoring single tied the game at 6-6, while a throwing error chased home the go-ahead run.
The Dash (6-4, 36-43) answered back in the bottom of the inning. Keon Barnum singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Zach Voight followed with another single to place runners at the corners for Omar Narvaez, who served a base hit to left field to tie the game at 7-7. Keenyn Walker immediately followed with an RBI single to push Winston-Salem back in front by one.
The bottom of the sixth yielded another run for the Dash. Joey DeMichele smacked a leadoff double against Carolina reliever Michael Peoples (4-7) and moved to third on a groundout. Jason Coats flew out to right field, but the throw home by Rodriguez was wild, allowing DeMichele to score for a 9-7 Winston-Salem cushion.
That advantage was not enough, as the Mudcats pushed across three runs in the eighth. Alex Monsalve's two-run double against Dash reliever Braulio Ortiz (0-8) tied the game at 9-9. Logan Vick's sacrifice fly to right field chased Monsalve home, giving Carolina a 10-9 lead.
The Mudcats tacked on an insurance run in the ninth against Winston-Salem hurler Dave Putman, who was making his Dash debut. Putman's wild pitch chased Yandy Diaz home for an 11-9 advantage.
Jacob Lee pitched a scoreless ninth for the Mudcats to earn his second save of the season.
The Dash and Mudcats will continue the three-game series Sunday evening at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem will send right-hander Tony Bucciferro (6-5, 3.41 ERA) to the mound, while Carolina counters with righty Cole Sulser (2-7, 5.14 ERA).
