Myrtle Beach Takes Road Opener

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (JUNE 28, 2014) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, remained undefeated at Lynchburg this season with an 8-3 win over the Hillcats on Saturday night at Calvin Falwell Field at City Stadium. Jorge Alfaro blasted his tenth homer, while Chris Grayson hit his first High-A long ball of the year. The Pelicans are 4-0 at Calvin Falwell Field and have not trailed at any point in the four games there this season.
The Hillcats (6-3, 40-39) had not allowed a hit in 20 2/3 consecutive innings entering Saturday's game. Daniel Watts recorded two outs before Nick Williams ended that streak with an infield single to second baseman Levi Hyams. Jorge Alfaro followed with a two-run blast down the left field line, his tenth home run, to put the Birds ahead 2-0.
Luis Parra also retired the first two batters of the night. The third man against him, Jose Martinez, smacked his first home run of the season to left center field, to trim the lead to 2-1.
The Pelicans southpaw then set down eight of the next nine batters before Lynchburg tied it in the fourth. With one out Kevin Ahrens doubled on a ground ball down the left field line and came across to score two batters later on a single from Emerson Landoni, tying the score at 2-2. . Myrtle Beach (6-3, 50-27) pulled right back into the lead in the following half inning. Watts surrendered a leadoff home run to Chris Grayson that flew over the outfield fence just to the right of center field. The home run was Grayson's first as a Pelican this season and second of the year for him; he hit one in Double-A.
The Birds led the rest of the way. They added two unearned runs later in the fifth, one on an error by Watts and a third of the inning on an RBI double from Preston Beck.
Parra finished his night after five strong innings. He allowed two runs, both earned on just three hits and a walk. He struck out a season-high six batters.
David Nick opened the home half of the sixth with a solo home run off of reliever Ryan Bores, cutting the deficit to two runs at 5-3. The Pelicans bullpen did not allow a run the rest of the way, as Bores, Justin Sprenger, and Jose Leclerc scattered three hits, three walks, and a hit batter over the final four innings.
The Pelicans tacked on three more runs in eighth off of David Peterson. Hanser Alberto knocked in one with a single, Williams brought another around on a walk, and a third scored on a double play off the bat of Alfaro.
Parra (6-4) earned his first win of June, while Watts (0-1) lost his first Hillcats decision.
Myrtle Beach goes for the series win on Sunday evening at Calvin Falwell Field at 6:05 p.m. Chad Bell (2-0, 1.69 ERA) makes his third start the Pelicans. On the other side, the Hillcats go with starter Jarrett Miller (3-6, 4.23 ERA). The game can be heard live on WRNN AM 1450 ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Hampton Inn Pregame Show at 5:45 p.m.
The next Pelicans home game is Tuesday, July 1, the beginning of a three-game series against the Winston-Salem Dash. The series features post-game fireworks on Wednesday and Thursday. Tuesday is a $sday Brewsday, Wednesday is a Wiener Wednesday, and Thursday is Thirsty Thursday. The game on July 3 begins at 8:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on the CBS Sports Network.
