Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - For the second time this season, the Winston-Salem Dash welcomed in the Greensboro Grasshoppers for the "Battle of I-40". With the game going back and forth for the first seven innings, Winston-Salem found a lead late taking game one 7-5 at Truist Stadium in front of 2,023 fans.
Winston-Salem (26-18) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double by Wilfred Veras but the bats would fall silent after that.
Po-Yu Chen took over for Greensboro (23-21) starter Braxton Ashcraft in the second and held the Winston-Salem bats at bay. The Grasshoppers took the lead in the third and held the advantage until the sixth.
With Chen still on the mound, the second time through the order against the right hander sparked a rally. Following a walk and advancing on a fielder's choice to second, DJ Gladney came home to tie the game up at two on an RBI double from Wes Kath. The Dash took the lead in the next at bat thanks to a Shawn Goosenberg sacrifice fly, making it 3-2.
Greensboro tied it up in the seventh, but Winston-Salem answered right back with another two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Caberea Weaver came home to score from third after a run down between first and second, and Kath picked up his second RBI on the night on another double to right center, pushing the advantage to 5-3.
Following another two runs in the eighth from the Grasshoppers tying it at five, Winston-Salem needed a rally again. Michael Turner sparked it. The catcher lined a double down the right field line and came home to score after a throwing error on a bunt attempt by Michell Miliano. Loidel Chapelli doubled the lead again on an RBI single up the middle, and Winston-Salem took a 7-5 lead to the ninth.
Adisyn Coffey was tabbed with the save attempt and slammed the door shut, setting down Greensboro in order punching out two finishing off the 7-5 win.
The Dash have now taken five of the first seven games in the "Battle of I-40" over the Grasshoppers. Kath finished the night 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and Veras picked up his league leading 20th double of the year in the bottom of the first.
Winston-Salem and Greensboro meet for game two on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
