Game #42 (Road Game #21)

PELICANS NIP DASH, CLAIM SERIES

In the rubber match of a three-game series, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans edged Winston-Salem 4-3 on Thursday at TicketReturn.Com Field. The difference in the game was Yasiel Balaguert's two-run blast in the fifth against Dash starter Jordan Stephens, who permitted all four Myrtle Beach runs in five innings of work. The Dash did pull within one thanks to two runs in the seventh, but Erick Leal (7 IP, 3 R) maintained the lead before Ryan McNeil and James Farris blanked the Dash in the eighth and ninth, respectively.

FROM ONE FAMILIAR FOE...

Thursday marked the last of 15 first-half duels between the Dash and Pelicans, which means that 37 percent of Winston-Salem's season has taken place against the Pelicans thus far this year. Dating back to last season, the Dash and Pelicans have played 44 times (regular season and playoffs), with the Birds enjoying a 25-19 edge. Myrtle seized 10 of the 15 meetings in this season set, which resumes July 4-7 in the Triad.

...TO ANOTHER

This week-long road trip continues against the Salem Red Sox, whom the Dash have already battled 12 times. The road team has earned the victory in 10 of those 12 contests. Salem is 7-1 in the Triad, while the Dash snagged three of four at LewisGale Field from April 21-24. By the end of the first half, Winston and Salem will have played 20 times, including this four-game set and the final four games of half one (June 16-19).

ADAMS ENCORE?

The Dash will lean on their ace in the opener of this series with the first-place Red Sox. Right-hander Spencer Adams, who logged a career-high eight innings in his last start Saturday at home against Potomac, will tangle with Salem for the fourth time. Adams has given up two earned runs or fewer in all but two of his outings, and both have come against the Red Sox (6 ER on both April 22 and May 8). More information on Adams is available on page 3 of the attached document.

BIG GAME HUNTER

Outfielder Hunter Jones has been remarkably productive over the last six games. The former Cleveland farmhand boasts a .542 (13-for-24) average with eight runs and seven stolen bases. During this span (Saturday through Thursday), Jones is tied with Mobile's Jamie Westbrook for the most hits in Minor League Baseball. The only Carolina Leaguer who has played 41 games, Jones is tied for second on the circuit with 48 hits. He also stands third in runs (31) and fourth in both steals (20) and triples (4).

OTHER PRODUCTIVE HITTERS

Even with an 0-for-4 showing Thursday, Adam Engel boasts a .350 (14-for-40) average since rejoining the Dash. He has scored 12 runs since his return on May 10, placing him tied for third in that category over this 10-day window. Gerson Montilla has driven home 12 runs in his last seven contests, which is good for a share of the Minor League lead during this stretch. Keon Barnum is riding a seven-game hitting streak, with Thursday marking his first multi-hit game of this surge. All eight hits have been singles.

NINE UP, NINE DOWN

Normally, retiring nine in a row is a noteworthy accomplishment, but Chris Sale has pulled off a "nine up, nine down" in the win column. Sale became the first Major Leaguer to reach nine wins with a complete game against Houston on Thursday. During his nine starts, Sale, who pitched for the Dash in 2010, boasts a 1.58 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP. No other big league hurler has earned more than seven wins, and only two men have reached that plateau: Jake Arrieta (Cubs) and Stephen Strasburg (Nationals).

DASH DOTS

Kelvis Valerio recorded season-highs in innings (3.0) and strikeouts (3) out of the bullpen Thursday...Winston-Salem relievers have strung together eight straight scoreless innings...After facing 10 straight right-handed starters, Salem's four probables this weekend are southpaws.
