Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM DASH (16-19) at POTOMAC NATIONALS (20-16)
RHP Bryan Blough (1-4, 6.94 ERA) vs. LHP Robbie Ray (3-1, 2.08 ERA)
7:05 p.m. - Pfitzner Stadium (Woodbridge, VA)
POTOMAC PULLS AWAY TWICE SUNDAY The Dash dropped both ends of a de facto twin bill Sunday afternoon at Pfitzner Stadium. Potomac claimed a 7-2 victory in the completion of Saturday's suspended game before cruising to a 7-1 triumph in the seven-inning finale. During the two games, Winston-Salem used seven pitchers, and five of them allowed at least one run. Thus, the Dash have lost nine of their last 12 to fall six and a half games behind first-place Myrtle Beach in the Southern Division.
ONE-HIT WONDER In the second game Sunday, Potomac right-hander Blake Schwartz tossed a complete game and surrendered only one hit, a David Herbek single to center with two outs in the fifth. It marked the first time in the Dash era (2009-present) that the club mustered only one hit in a game. Winston-Salem had turned in five two-hit efforts over the last four-plus seasons. The P-Nats have posted three of the four complete games in the Carolina League thus far in 2013.
LIMITING THE SWEEPS Since 2009, the Dash have only suffered eight sweeps, with the only one this season coming at Carolina to begin the season (April 5-7). The Dash's single-season high for sweeps is three, which took place in 2011. This weekend marks the first time since August 18-20, 2011, that the Dash lost the first three games of a four-game set. This also took place at Pfitzner Stadium, and Winston-Salem salvaged the finale with a 15-3 win. The last time Winston suffered a four-game sweep was in Myrtle Beach from June 2-5, 2008, when the team was the Warthogs.
OFFENSE THRIVES, TEAM STRUGGLES The Dash have dropped nine of their last 12 for the first time since August of 2012, but the offense is still playing fairly well. The Dash are hitting .284 in these 12 games after residing near the bottom of the CL in average during April. However, Winston-Salem's opposition is averaging 6.9 runs per game during this slump.
HEISLER'S ON-BASE STREAK Dating back to last season, Winston-Salem outfielder Adam Heisler has reached base in 38 straight games, which is the second-longest current streak in Minor League Baseball. Jamal Austin of High Desert (High-A, Seattle) has reached safely in 44 straight games dating back to late last season. Scooter Gennett of Nashville (Triple-A, Milwaukee) saw his 39-game run come to an end with an 0-for-4 effort Sunday against Sacramento.
MORE ON THE STREAK Heisler reached in his final three games of 2012 while with rookie-level Great Falls before finding his way on base in all 35 games this year (19 with Low-A Kannapolis and 16 with Winston-Salem). Heisler has hit safely in 29 of these 36 games, during which he owns a .299 average (44-for-147) with 16 RBIs and 27 runs scored. However, Heisler went hitless in both games finished Sunday. He extended his streak on a hit by pitch in the second inning of the suspended contest and walked in the first frame of the seven-inning finale.
ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END Dash infielder Jeremy Farrell saw his 10-game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-4 showing in the suspended game from Saturday. Farrell fell one game shy of teammate Mark Haddow (April 6-18) and Salem infielder Garin Cecchini (April 22-May 4), whose 11-game streaks are the longest in the CL thus far this season. During this run, the former Pittsburgh farmhand boasted a batting average of .366 (15-for-41) with three homers and 12 RBIs.
SIX-GAME HOMESTAND UP NEXT The Dash will return to the Triad for a six-game homestand Tuesday through Sunday. First-place Myrtle Beach comes to town for the only time in the first half, while Potomac becomes the final CL squad to make its first 2013 trip to Winston-Salem this weekend. The Dash expect to welcome BB&T Ballpark's millionth fan Thursday.
