RAYADOS FALL 11-1 TO WOOD DUCKS
Sporting their Rayados jerseys as part of Minor League Baseball's "Copa de la Diversión" initiative, the Winston-Salem Dash fell to the Down East Wood Ducks 11-1 in Sunday afternoon's series finale at BB&T Ballpark. Right-hander Blake Hickman got the start for the Rayados, and he ran into trouble in the second. After issuing a two-out walk, Josh Altmann drilled a two-run homer to make it a 2-0 Down East advantage. The Wood Ducks would add on three more in the third and two in the fourth, handing Hickman the loss in his four-inning performance. Despite the defeat, Winston-Salem still captured a series victory over Down East by winning the first three games of the series.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
After 14 days of either playing at home or on break, the Dash are hitting the road for a nine-game swing, which is their longest stretch away from BB&T Ballpark this season. On Monday, Winston-Salem kicks off a five-game series against the Frederick Keys at Nymeo Field. The Keys finished in second in the Northern Division in the first half with a 35-34 record, and the ballclub is off to a 1-3 start in the second half. The Keys sent five men to the Carolina League All-Star Game in Zebulon, N.C. - LHP Tyler Erwin, LHP Alex Wells, RHP Cristian Alvarado, OF Preston Palmeiro and INF Ryan McKenna.
A NEW STAR IN WINSTON-SALEM
Rated the 24th-best overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, Luis Robert is 4-for-14 with two runs scored and an RBI to start at the High-A level. Robert, who was promoted to Winston on Thursday, began the year on the Dash's disabled list with a sprained ligament in his left thumb before being transferred to Low-A Kannapolis, where he posted a line of .289/.360/.400 with four RBIs in 13 games. Chicago signed Robert in May of 2017 for $26 million. Robert is wearing #21 due to a suggestion from Dash manager Omar Vizquel, who said Robert reminded him of baseball legend Roberto Clemente.
MORE KANNAPOLIS STARS
Alongside Robert, five players were promoted from Kannapolis to Winston-Salem last Thursday. Four have seen game action so far, and here's how they fared with Kannapolis and in Winston so far:
RHP Tyler Johnson (SAL All-Star): seven saves and a 1.33 ERA with 46K in 27.0IP w/ KAN; earned first High-A save on Saturday with a 1-2-3 ninth vs DE
INF Laz Rivera (SAL All-Star): led the SAL in average (.346) with six homers and 24 RBIs; 2-for-13, 2B, RBI in three games with Winston
OF Luis Gonzalez (SAL All-Star): Logged an impressive .850 OPS with eight homers and 26 RBIs; 3-for-7 with two runs in two games in Winston
RHP Lincoln Henzman: Went 6-3 with a 2.23 ERA in 13 starts; yielded two runs in one inning on Sunday vs. DE
A DASH DEBUT ON MONDAY
Right-hander Blake Battenfield will make his High-A debut in Winston-Salem's series opener on Monday. The former Oklahoma State hurler was a Midseason All-Star selection with Low-A Kannapolis, going 5-3 with a 2.00 ERA in 13 starts with the Intimidators. The righty was also a 17th-round selection by the White Sox in 2017. Battenfield is not the only member of his family to have attended Oklahoma State, as both of his parents and two of his grandparents also attended the university. His brother Peyton is also currently a pitcher for the Cowboys.
DASH DOTS
Blake Rutheford and Micker Adolfo, two of the White Sox top 30 prospects per MLB Pipeline, each hit two homers during the Dash's previous homestand against the Down East Wood Ducks...Rutherford finished the four-game set by going 4-for-12 with five RBIs...Meanwhile, Adolfo was 5-for-16 during the four-day span with six RBIs...The eight games the Dash will play against the Keys are the third-fewest for the ballclub against an opponent this season (7 vs. POT & 6 vs. LYN).
