Sanford Mainers News Release

SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers took on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats on Wednesday night at Goodall Park. In the longest game by time of the year for the Mainers this year, the Muskrats won the game 6-2 in just under four hours behind 15 strikeouts from the pitching staff.

Matt Aronson (UMass) made the start for Sanford and took the loss as he gave up the first two runs after three innings and the offense couldn't come back. Aronson left the game after four innings, allowing the two earned runs, five hits, four walks and striking out three.

After the Muskrats took an early 2-0 lead, the Mainers cut into the leads when Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky) singled to drive in Ubaldo Lopez (Georgetown) in the fourth. Sanford's second run came in the sixth with an RBI single by Mitch Moralez (Utah Valley) brought home Freddy Rojas Jr. (UT-Rio Grande Valley). The Mainers struggled to drive in runs as they left 15 on base in the contest.

Blake Bennett (UMass) and Trevor LaBonte (Maryland) shined out of the bullpen for the Mainers. Bennett came in after Aronson to throw two innings with six strikeouts, and gave up two earned runs. LaBonte followed, and after walking the first batter he faced, he struck out the next five batters in his two innings.

The offense was led by Pierce Gallo (Clemson) and Ridley, who each had two hits in the loss.

Winnipesaukee added two more runs in the ninth inning to pull out to a 6-2 lead, which they would win by with Reese Sharp earning the win in relief.

The Sanford Mainers hit the road for two straight games before the All-Star Game on Sunday, the first against the Upper Valley Nighthawks on Friday and the second against the Vermont Mountaineers on Saturday.
