Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes won the opener of a four-game set tonight, downing the Schaumburg Flyers 6-2 before 6,479 at Canwest Park.
Schaumburg opened the scoring off Bear Bay in the fourth. Victor Ferrante reached to lead it off when he was hit by a pitch and scored on a Victor Ferrante double. Ferrante went to third on a ground out, Jeff Dunbar was hit by a pitch and Ferrante scored when Craig Maddox bounced into a botched double play. Winnipeg replied in the sixth off Ryan Gehring. With Josh Asanovich aboard on a lead-off single, Vince Harrison clubbed the first pitch he saw deep to left to tie it. Things stayed that way until the ninth.
After being hit by a Tom Lyons pitch to start the inning, Dee Brown was sacrificed to second by Brent Metheny. Cody Ehlers was intentionally walked and replaced by pinch-runner Dustin Richardson. Both runners moved up on a Mark Minicozzi ground out before Cory Patton was intentionally walked to load the bases for Adam Frost, who sent a 2-1 offering straight down the left field line to end it.
Chris Homer (2-3) tossed an inning of shutout relief to get the win, allowing a pair of singles while fanning one and walking none. Lyons (2-5) took the loss after allowing four runs on one hit and three walks.
