Calgary Vipers News Release
It took the Calgary Vipers extra innings but they extended their franchise record winning streak to 11 games with a 4-3 victory over the Chico Outlaws in ten innings at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. With the game on the line in the top of the ninth inning Mac Suzuki came into the contest and with two runners on and nobody out he was able to preserve the tie. After pitching a scoreless, seven-pitch tenth inning Suzuki (4-2) was credited with the win when his team walked off with the victory for the second consecutive game. The Vipers improved their overall record to 31-13 and second half mark to 5-0 to remain in first place in the both the Golden Baseball League and the North Division.
Fehlandt Lentini made the defensive play of the game, and maybe of the year, in the fifth inning as he jumped into the centerfield wooden wall at a full sprint to make a highlight reel catch.
For his third straight start Erik Dessau threw a terrific game going seven innings and giving up two runs while walking only one. To start off the night Dessau retired the first 12 batters he faced and had a perfect game going into the fifth inning. Jo Matumoto also pitched a outstanding game for the Outlaws as he threw nine innings without giving up an earned run or a walk while striking out six. Ben Shockey (1-3) took the tough loss in pitching the tenth frame.
Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning as Dillon O'Krane singled, Nelson Castro reached on a fielding error, Jorge Mejia doubled in one, Colin Moro plated a second tally with a groundout, and Caonabo Cosme knocked in a final run with a two-base hit for a 3-0 advantage.
Chico scored a run in the top of the fifth inning as Shane Cronin and Ryan Brown singled, and with two outs Dan Luyben cashed a run with a base hit for a 3-1 score.
Brown smacked a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to bring the Outlaws within one run at 3-2.
Chico tied the game in the top of the eighth inning as with two outs Dale Swinford doubled and Rich Janeway singled him home for a 3-3 score.
In the bottom of the tenth Castro tripled when the ball was lost in the light sky and Mejia drove in the game winning run with a sacrifice fly for a 4-3 final.
