St. George Cruises Past Marshalls in Exhibition

ST. GEORGE, UTAH - The St. George RoadRunners defeated the Utah Marshalls, a Connie Mack club from Salt Lake, 8-1 in exhibition action Thursday night from Bruce Hurst Field.

Eric Van Slyke pitched aggressively against the young club and tallied seven shutout innings. He allowed three hits and struck out seven in his most dominant appearance of the year. Julio Castro hurled a scoreless inning in relief.

St. George struck early off Dixie High Graduate Chunner Nyberg. Ruddy Yan and A.J. Valentine reached with one-out singles. Jose Rodriguez lined a base hit to left scoring Yan and advancing Valentine to third. DH Cody Nowlin brought home Valentine with a sacrifice fly to center.

The ‘Runners extended their lead to 3-0 in the second when Eric Pringle scored Henry Calderon from third base on a sacrifice fly.

After three scoreless innings from both starters, the RoadRunners increased their lead to a half-dozen off Nyberg in the sixth inning. Three singles from D.J. Dixon, Nowlin and Angel Sanchez loaded the bags for Calderon. A two-run double from Calderon was followed by an RBI single from Yosvany Almario.

In the seventh off Marshalls' reliever Taylor Jones, Dixon doubled and Sanchez blasted a homer to left-center to make it 8-0.

Utah scored an unearned run in the ninth after Pine View standout Marcus Littlewood singled home Matthew Williams off Justin Abbott.

St. George tallied 13 hits led by Calderon with three (two doubles, one single). The Marshalls had five hits including two in the final frame.

The RoadRunners will take Friday through Sunday off before playing another exhibition Monday night against the Southern Utah Legends. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm Mountain.
