Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals continued to upgrade their roster during this week's All Star Break by acquiring left-handed hitters Walter Young (1B/DH) and Darrick Hale (2B/SS). Both players will be in uniform for the four-game series against the Seals beginning tonight in Victoria.
Standing 6'5" and tipping the scales at 290lbs, Young is considered a home run threat in every at-bat. Young was drafted in the 31st Round in the 1999 MLB Amateur Draft out of Purvis (Mississippi) High School and played as high as Triple-A in the San Diego Padres system. Last season Young played Independent baseball in Sioux City and Sussex.
Hale fills a hole at the middle infield position for the Capitals that had been created when shortstop Max Poulin left the team for personal family reasons about a week ago. Hale went undrafted after his collegiate career at Cal State Los Angeles but did sign with and play in the Cincinnati Reds organization. Hale climbed to the high-A level with the Reds in 2008 and also spent a portion of the year with Yuma in the Golden Baseball League.
To make room for the new acquisitions, the Capitals placed pitcher Aaron Easton on the Inactive List and released first baseman/designated hitter Norm Hutchins. Max Poulin also remains on the Caps Inactive List.
Following the series in Victoria, the Capitals return to TELUS Field to host the Calgary Vipers for a three-game series from Tuesday, July 21 through Thursday, July 23. This will be the first of sixteen games between the North Division and provincial rivals.
Tickets for all Edmonton Capitals home games are available at the Capitals Box Office at TELUS Field, any TicketMaster location, by calling 780-414-GOAL (4625) or by visiting CapsBaseball.ca.
