Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA (May 9th, 2013) -- Modesto captured a series victory over the Stockton Ports with a 2-0 shutout win on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.
In the rubber-match of a three-game series, the Nuts (15-19) were led by another fantastic starting pitching effort. Dan Winkler (4-2) took a no-hitter into the fifth, and eventually went 5 2/3 innings while allowing just one single and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts. The right-hander has been stingy with allowing hits this season, limiting the opposition to just 25 in 40 2/3 innings pitched.
Ports starter Tanner Peters matched Winkler with zeroes through the first four innings, until the Nuts plated an unearned run in the fifth. Brian Humphries led off the inning with a double, and eventually came around to score on a two-out throwing error by third-baseman Tony Thompson.
Winkler departed with two outs in the sixth inning after hitting a batter and striking out two, giving way to reliever Geoff Parker. Parker gave up a single before inducing a pop-out to keep the Nuts ahead 1-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Harold Riggins crushed an opposite-field homer to right to stake the Nuts to a 2-0 advantage. Riggins has now homered in four of his last seven games to give him five for the season.
Parker returned and worked a perfect seventh, and Leuris Gomez came in and did the same in the eighth. In the ninth, Scott Oberg entered to finish the game, and worked around a walk and a single to keep the Ports off the board for his seventh save of the year.
Winkler's outing continued an impressive run for the Nuts starting rotation, which has allowed just five earned runs and 15 hits over the last six starts, spanning 37 2/3 innings pitched (1.20 ERA).
The Nuts finished 6-1 on their homestand, winning consecutive series for the first time this season.
Modesto will try to keep their roll going as they head to Bakersfield to take on the Blaze, a club they swept over the weekend at John Thurman Field. First pitch on Friday night is set for 7:30 p.m. from Sam Lynn Ballpark. RHP Tyler Gagnon (1-2, 6.54) will start for the Nuts, opposite RHP Jake Johnson (2-1, 6.91) for the Blaze.
