PENSACOLA, Fla. - After flirting with history last week, the Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announced Pensacola Blue Wahoos outfielder Jesse Winker as Player of the week for August 10 through 16. Winker came close to matching Southern League history by homering in five straight games, just one short of Derrek Lee's six in a row set in 1996.

Winker is the fourth Blue Wahoos player to be honored by the Southern League this year. Catcher Kyle Skipworth was honored the week of July 13-20 for also hitting home runs in five straight games. Starting pitchers Tim Adleman and Cody Reed were named Pitchers of the Week on June 22-29 and August 3-10, respectively.

Winker began the five-game run in Pensacola's 13-10 slugfest win over Birmingham on August 11, where he went 3-for-5 with three runs, a double, home run and two RBIs. He followed the next two evenings with opposite field launches in back-to-back losses against the Biloxi Shuckers.

Winker's most important dingers came in consecutive wins over the Shuckers on August 14 and 15. Winker connected on a first-inning home run, which was the only run of the game in the 1-0 win and just one of two hits for the Wahoos that evening. The following evening, Winker drilled a two-run shot to right-center in the eighth inning, breaking a scoreless tie that helped his club take a 2-1 victory.

This is the third career weekly award for the first round draft pick and Windermere, Fla., native. Winker was named Midwest League Player of the Week on May 20, 2013, while he was selected for the same honor by the Arizona Fall League on October 14 of last year.
