Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - A wild 12-run third inning was enough Wednesday night for the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings to post a 12-10 victory over the San Angelo Colts in United League Baseball action at Harlingen Field.
The 12-run outburst was complete with only three hits, though one was a grand slam from shortstop Omar Bramasco. Six walks, two errors and a hit batter also contributed as the Wings batted around and then some against San Angelo starter Adam Hanson (5-9) and reliever Mike Snapp.
Erik Foor (1-0) gained his first win as a WhiteWing, pitching four and one-third innings in relief of starter Danny Bonilla. Bonilla, who threw three wild pitches, didn't make it out of the first inning, allowing three runs on two hits and one walk before being pulled. Foor allowed four earned runs on six hits. Ignacio Estrada pitched three innings and allowed three earned runs before closer Clemente Doble shut the door with a perfect ninth for his fifth save.
Hanson, a former WhiteWing, allowed only one hit but allowed six runs after walking four and hitting one batter in the third. He was pulled for Snapp, who allowed runs to score on a wild pitch, hit batter, fielder's choice, error, single, two walks with the bases loaded and a grand slam from Bramasco.
Sam McLain got the inning started off with a one-out double, and the parade continued with a total of 15 batters coming to the plate in the inning. Hanson was pulled after walking two batters with the bases loaded. In all, the Wings scored four runs in the inning on bases loaded walks, and another on a wild pitch. San Angelo pitchers issued eight walks in all.
The Colts scored runs in six of the nine innings, taking a 5-0 lead into the third inning. San Angelo had 12 hits in all, while the Wings had just six, two by Jermy Acey. Doble picked up his second save in as many nights.
With the win, the Wings improved to 36-46 overall and gained a game on both Amarillo and Laredo in the ULB standings. Amarillo (38-45) lost 5-2 to Edinburg, and Laredo (38-44) lost 3-2 to Alexandria. RGV now stands just two games behind Laredo for the final playoff spot.
The series finale with the Colts will be at 7:05 Thursday night at Harlingen Field, with Joey Cress (5-6, 6.11 ERA) and Yorkin Ferreras (4-5, 3.19) the scheduled starters.
