Wings Offense Slowed in 4-1 Loss to Gwinnett Saturday
July 20, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Red Wings offense had a rare off night Saturday. Rochester was limited to four hits - all singles - in a 5-1 loss to the Gwinnett Stripers at Coolray Field.
After back-to-back losses to the wild card-leading Stripers, the Wings are now 10 games out of the wild card spot with 41 games to play.
Devin Smeltzer suffered the loss for Rochester allowing four runs on four hits over four innings of work. The stirruped southpaw walked two and struck out zero over his 75-pitch outing.
The big blow for the Stripers came off the bat of Travis Demeritte who hit a three-run homer of Smeltzer on an 0-2 pitch in the fifth inning.
Alex Jackson gave Gwinnett the lead with a solo homer in the fourth inning.
The Wings lone run came in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Ronald Torreyes.
Saturday was the first time since June 23 that the Wings were held to one or fewer runs.
Fernando Romero pitched well in relief striking out four in two scoreless innings.
The Wings look to salvage the series finale on Sunday afternoon with Sean Poppen on the rubber for Rochester. First pitch at 1:05pm.
