Philadelphia Wings News Release
Philadelphia Wings' forward and fan favorite Jake Bergey was selected today in the 2008 National Lacrosse League Expansion Draft by Boston, the new expansion team that begins play this season at the world famous TD Banknorth Garden. Boston selected a total of 13 players in the Expansion Draft, or one player per team in the league.
"Jake had surgery on his knee this spring and told us that he was not certain that he would play next season," said Wings Executive Vice-President and Owner Chris Fritz. "In addition, Jake has a very busy schedule with his job in medical sales that keeps him tied to the Philadelphia area. As a result, we decided that because of his injuries, work and family commitments, we would leave Jake unprotected believing that he would be returning in Wings jersey if he elected to play."
Bergey played all ten years of his NLL career in Philadelphia. He is the Wings' second all-time leading scorer (496 points) and third all-time leader in goal scoring (228) and assists (268). The Chaddsford, PA native was a member of two Wings' World Championship teams (1998 and 2001) and two NLL All-Star teams (2006 and 1999). He was selected by the Wings in the fifth round of the 1998 NLL Entry Draft. Bergey is the son of former Philadelphia Eagles middle linebacker Bill Bergey.
Boston Head Coach and former Philadelphia Wing forward (2000 - 2003) Tom Ryan selected thirteen unprotected players, one from each current NLL franchise. For a full list of Boston's picks log on to www.nll.com.
