Rush lose Campbell in Expansion Draft
July 31, 2007 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Edmonton Rush News Release
Pat Campbell, the Edmonton Rush's Team MVP in its inaugural season, was chosen second by Boston in the National Lacrosse League's 2007 Expansion Draft held today.
Campbell was among the most popular players during his two seasons in Edmonton as the fan favorite endeared himself with passionate play on the floor and his good-natured spirit. He was initially acquired by the Rush as the team's fourth pick in the 2005 NLL Expansion Draft.
"We expected we might lose Pat but we are still very disappointed to see him go," said Rush Team President Duane Vienneau. "The fans loved him and he went out every night wanting to give something back to them for their support.
"Pat was a dynamic character and a perfect face for a new team in a great sports city like Edmonton. I'm sure the fans in Boston will feel the same way about him there."
Although he was not included the Rush's Unprotected List, Campbell was eligible for the Expansion Draft after finishing the 2007 season on the Physically Unable to Play List due to illness.
Campbell was largely responsible for two of the biggest wins in the Rush's history. He racked up a team-record 54 saves when the Rush won its first game - a 12-11 victory at the Saddledome in Calgary - and Campbell earned the NLL's Defensive Player of the Week Award for his performance.
And last season, Campbell made 39 saves when the Rush beat Philadelphia 13-12 to capture their first home-turf win at Rexall Place.
The 29-year-old native of Niagara Falls, Ont., holds the Rush record for assists in a season by a goaltender with 12 and shares with Curtis Palidwor the Rush record for assists in a game with four.
"From my perspective, Pat really helped establish the Rush in the community, not only as the Team MVP but for the way he loved meeting and talking with the fans at every opportunity," said Rush GM/Head Coach Paul Day.
"It's also hard to see him go because he's a good friend of mine but I do believe he'll do some great things for Boston."
The Rush will host the 2008 NLL All-Star Game this year. Full details will be available once the 2008 season schedule is announced.
