Wings drop close game to Boston in home opener
January 23, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Philadelphia Wings News Release
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Wings dropped a close back and forth game to the Boston Blazers 13-11 at the Wachovia Center after playing a man down for the majority of the game when 2008 MVP Athan Iannucci left the game after re-aggravating a knee injury in the first quarter.
Boston started fast thanks to their leading scorer on the night, NLL first overall pick Daryl Veltman, who scored three of five goals in the first eight minutes of play. Philadelphia got rolling on the offensive thanks to second year forwards Merrick Thomson and Drew Westervelt but still trailed at halftime by a score of 7-5.
Without Iannucci, the Wings found a balanced scoring attack in the third that got them back into the game. Geoff Snider, Westervelt, Mat Giles, and Jordan Levine all had goals to help the team inch closer at the end of the third down only 10-9.
Giles and Westervelt each added fourth quarter goals, but it wasn't enough to overcome being down a man for almost the entire game. The game's top scorer, Daryl Veltman, ended the game the same way he started it, with a goal.
Iannucci's status is uncertain for the second half of the home and home on Saturday night (January 24 at 7:30 p.m.) in Boston. Fans can watch the game live on the NLL Network on NLL.com. The Wings return home to play the Buffalo Bandits at the Wachovia Center on Friday, February 6 at 8 p.m.
