Wings' Bullpen Sinks Cats

HARLINGEN, Texas-The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (17-18) bullpen held the Fort Worth Cats (22-13) in order for a combined five inning shutout in route to a 5-4 win Friday night at Harlingen field.

Starting center fielder Cameron Monger led off the first inning with a ground rule double. Chris Ellison then scored Monger on a RBI single giving the Cats an early 1-0 lead.

Kevin Lusson would lead off the bottom of the second inning with a base hit back up the middle Johnny Bowden would come to the plate with two outs in the inning, Bowden scored Lusson from third tying the game 1-1.

Starting Shortstop Roberto Ramirez hit a sharp ground ball down the right field line for a leadoff triple, this set the stage for Albert Carpen who hit an RBI single scoring Ramirez giving the Wings a 2-1 lead.

Thomas Shull came to the plate with runners on second and third, Shull belted a frozen rope back up the middle scoring Goose Kallunki and Kevin Lusson extending the lead 4-1.

Michael Garcia would score on a pass ball making it a 5-1 lead, As the Wings went on to score four runs in the frame.

The Cats led off the top of the fourth inning with back to back singles Aljay Davis and Shelby Ford. David Bergen would line in a two run RBI double trimming the lead to 5-3. Daniel Meeley would later score on a double play turned from Shull making it a one run game, 5-4.

The Wings bullpen would close the door as Jordan Goldschmidt, Paul Mantalbano and Nelson Curry pitched a combined five inning shutout and scattering just four hits.

Thomas Shull went 2-for-4 on the night with two RBI's, starting pitcher Drew Coffey (1-0) got his first win of the year going five and one third, on eight hits and four runs. Cats starting pitcher Cole Stephens (1-2) was charged with the loss only going three innings on eight hits.

The series finale is set for Saturday at Harlingen field. The Wings send Bobby O'Neill to the mound, with the Wings looking to split the four game series versus the Cats. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
