Aces earn 1-0 victory

EDINBURG- Jadd Schmeltzer came out of the bullpen to pitch eight shutout innings give the Alexandria Aces a 1-0 victory against the Edinburg Roadrunners Friday night.

Schmeltzer (1-0), a Cornell graduate who pitched two years in the Boston Red Sox organization, allowed only six hits and walked one while fanning five to win his first game of the season and put the Aces (18-17) over .500. The righthander had previously appeared in 10 games for the Aces out of the bullpen.

Roadrunners (15-20) starter Curtis Camilli, a fourth-generation professional player whose great-grandfather Dolph starred for the Brooklyn Dodgers under Leo Durocher, was also outstanding, throwing more than 125 pitches in a complete game. But Camilli (3-2) allowed a single run in the fourth inning when Chad Bunting singled to left to drive in Austin Newell, who had two of Alexandria's seven hits in the game.

Gabe Grammer pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save and was aided by a batting-out-of-order call for the second out.

The Aces have taken two of the first three games of the four game series. The finale will be played Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. with Jon Jones (3-1) starting for Alexandria.
