Rochester Red Wings News Release
Rookie pitcher Humberto Sanchez put the Red Wings offense on ice Sunday afternoon, as the Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Rochester 3-0 Sunday on a 93° day at Frontier Field. Garrett Jones and Glenn Williams had the only two hits for the Red Wings, who entered the game leading the International League in team batting.
Red Wings starter Jason Miller had a shaky first, but got some help with the leather. With runners on first and second and none out, Ryan Raburn lined a ball to shortstop Gil Velazquez who then doubled up the runner on first. Miller retired the next batter with a fly out.
Miller was sharp, and Toledo's Sanchez handled the Wings with ease - allowing just two walks over four innings. The Mud Hens broke a scoreless tie with a home run from Mike Hessman in the top of the fifth. Then with runners on first and third, the Hens tacked on another run as Nook Logan grounded into a force out that scored Don Kelly to take a 2-0 lead. With two outs in the fifth, the Wings got their first hit off of Sanchez - a single to center field by Williams.
Miller came out to pitch the sixth but ran into some trouble. With runners on first and second Manager Stan Cliburn called for Beau Kemp. Kemp retired the next two batters he faced.
Sanchez (3-0) lasted until one out in the seventh, when Rochester put runners at first and second. Chris Spurling came in for Sanchez, and got an inning-ending double play against Luiz Maza. It was the only legitimate threat the Wings offense could muster on the day.
David Espinosa homered off Kemp in the eighth for the final Toledo run. Lee Gardner pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his 14th save for the Mud Hens. Miller (1-2), in just his third start after beginning the season in the bullpen, tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs (one earned), six hits and two walks while striking out three.
NOTES: The 23-year-old Sanchez made just his third Triple-A start, after opening the season by going 5-3 with a 1.76 ERA at Double-A Erie. Sanchez has now allowed just one earned run in 19 innings (0.47 ERA) in Triple-A for Toledo...With Sunday's attendance of 9,717, this weekend became the 2nd highest three-day attendance total in Frontier Field history: 33,899. The only three-day total higher is August 25- 27, 1997 when the Red Wings drew 37,334 fans....Outfielder Josh Rabe will miss the next three games; he's attending the funeral of a friend. Rabe will rejoin the Red Wings in Louisville for the road series that begins Thursday.
